WHAT IS COLOURLOCK?

Lederzentrum GMBH, based in Germany, is one of the oldest and leading leather colour care and repair companies in the world. Distinct Detail is a Colourlock Centre, having over five years of experience in leather and interior colour and damage repair.

Colourlock products are different to acrylic paint repair products in that they are water-based and form a safe and durable dye system that bonds to the leather surface and replicates the factory leather dye system. This means that repairs are closest in match to the factory colour of your leather, and allow you to repair damage while maintaining originality and resale value.

WHAT SURFACES CAN BE REPAIRED?

The Colourlock system allows for quality interior surface repairs, not only on leather surfaces. Leatherette, vinyl and plastic can also be repaired, which allows us to cater to all necessary areas of the interior of your vehicle. The following damage can be repaired:

  • Scratches

  • Small tears

  • Cigarette burns

  • Loss of colour from abrasion

  • Dye transfer to the base colour

  • Cracks in plastics

THE PROCESS

INTERIOR CLEANING & PREPARATION

All leather requires regular cleaning with the right products. Shiny is dirty! Leather (and most interior surfaces) should be matte in appearance. Oils and grime will clog the pores of leather and lead to a shiny appearance. Ingrained dirt and abrasion from contact with jeans and fabrics leads to damage over time.

  1. All interior surfaces are deep cleaned to remove all impurities and expose the true condition of the surface.
  2. Any serious damage is filled with special products designed to create a suitable base for dye application.
  3. In the case of very dry leathers, special hydration products are used to add moisture and flexibility to the surface to add stability to the repair.

VEHICLE FORMULA & DYE MIX

Vehicle interiors are created using manufacturer specific colours. Colourlock has an expansive database of interior colours that guarantee excellent matching to the factory dye and pigment

  1. Once a matching dye mix has been selected, this colour is mixed in small amounts and tested on an inconspicuous part of the interior to test for correctness.
  2. Any tweaks to the formula are then performed to accommodate for the wear of the vehicle. For example, convertible vehicles will have areas that suffer from UV fade.
  3. The confirmed working formula is then mixed to the amount needed for the repair areas.

APPLICATION

Depending on the size and scope of the repair the dye will be applied, and dried between coats to cure. Normally a three-stage approach is used:

1. Leather Primer is applied as a base for the new dye.

2. Dye is applied, and dried with heat between coats.

3. Finally, a finishing clear coat layer is applied to seal the repair and provide a gloss-matte finish depending on what the original surface requires.

After the dye repair process is complete, the interior is sealed to protect all surfaces including the dye-repaired areas with Colourlock-specific protectants.
